I'm an idiot!!!! I was looking for all of the housing markings on the same side of the engine as the balancer chain, but the front sprocket has to be lined up by the weight on the other end of its shaft (the right side of the engine). When you said the right side, I thought you meant of the sprocket...

not sure what you mean about the camshaft situation though, as haven't got that far yet (although I bought a NOS one 2 years ago before I found out the 500R has a hole drilled in the end for the rev counter. I'll tackle that problem when I get to it).

so are you saying that there is no mark on the XL500R balancer sprocket to line up with link 1 of the chain? What I need to do is put link 27 of the balancer chain on the marked tooth of the input shaft sprocket, then link 9 on the marked tooth of the crankshaft sprocket when its at TDC, then put th...

finally, the upper and lower crankcases are together. I just need to find out the answer to the balancer sprocket question and hopefully the build should speed up.

just to clarify, I need to know which tooth of the sprocket lines up with the white painted link number 1 of the balancer chain?
If it is the line marking on the weight, you can't see which tooth is directly behind it.

The Haynes manual shows a different front balancer sprocket than mine. You can see all of the teeth on theirs, as there is no weight to cover them. You can also clearly see the balance chain punch mark for link 1 to line up against. It is stamped below one of the teeth. Mine however has no punch mar...

Haynes manual says this but old chain is 1st/9th/25th and I've found other errors in manual.

I've just checked the 2 chains in the daylight and they both have the same markings.
Not sure if my old chain was original, but at least they match.

XL500R balancer chain 13440429003 - urgent as holding up my engine rebuild

Does anyone know if the original Honda factory chain is actually made by DID (stamped on links) and whether a NOS one should have the 3 white location markings already painted on them from the factory?
