mixture screw on the XL500S

Beitrag von Georgios »

Hello again,

I am trying to adjust the idle mixture on my XL500S in order to prevent stalling at the lights, which is very annoyng and dangerous. Firstly, does this screw adjust the air or the fuel? I think because it is after the slide towards the engine that it adjusts the fuel. So screwing out makes the mixture richer and screwing in makes the mixture leaner. Am I correct? I have read in the Haynes manual that the setting is two turns out from fully set. The Clymers manual says 2 turns and 3/8 of a turn out from fully set. What do you suggest? And do you know any easy way to adjust this screw as it is too difficult not to get burnt when the motor is hot and running.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi and Yiasu ti kanis from Alemannia

My experiance in english-language is not so perfect but let me write it to ya.

The mixture-screw on botton of carb regulates the gas-mixture .
Screw it in makes it lean. Screw it out makes it rich.

First screw it in ligt to the end, but be careful for screwing in-
Then srew it two turns out for first setting.
Then ride a wile ( maybe fot 10 minutes ).
If ya have a tachymeter for rotation set it on 1200r/pm simular.
Now srew it ( mixture screw ) in during the engine becomes to lean and get to stop.
So Ya screw it now two turns out and regulate the rotation ( 1200r/pm simular ) on the srew on left side.

mixture screw on XL500S

Beitrag von Georgios »

Hello Lordhelmchen (kalemera),

Thanks for your reply. If I got right, I must firstly set in lightly the screw, then turn it out two full turns. After riding the bike and reaching the temperature above 50C I must screw it in just until it stalls and then two full turns out from that point? After doing that in your bike how many turns in total from fully in is the mixture screw in your bike? Just to use it as a reference.

Cheers

Hello Georgios,

The instructions that Lordhelmchen gave is correct, and regarding your question about where the mixture screw will end up after the final and correct adjustment, then it will be about 2,5 turns out.
If that will not work, then you have some other carburator related
problems.

Cheers,
Jambo

Thank you for your kind reply Jumbo. I will follow the instructions of Lordhelmchen and I hope I will not suffer any more stalls at the traffic lights.
I wish there were more XL500S users at the international section of the forum.

cheers
