URGENT: balancer chain question

Beitrag von baldock »

XL500R balancer chain 13440429003 - urgent as holding up my engine rebuild

Does anyone know if the original Honda factory chain is actually made by DID (stamped on links) and whether a NOS one should have the 3 white location markings already painted on them from the factory?

You can get the original balancer chain from Peter in Switzerland. A new chain does not have the markings, please use a paint-brush yourself.
But be careful, there is also a chain with reinforced links, but it is a bit wider and does not run so well on the bar behind the pole wheel. It makes a whirring noise.
The chain has the identification DID 270 SR-66, but not the H version (reinforced). with 66 chain links.

thanks for the replies.
I've been buying various xl500 nos parts over the past 2 years.
Unfortunately, some turned out not to be XL500.

The balance chain came in a brown paper envelope with the correct Honda label loose inside. Unfortunately the packaging was open.
The chain is covered in a thick tar like grease and hardly bends from left to right (unlike my used one), so I guess it is new.

I don't want to fit an incorrect chain and later find that I have to strip the engine apart again.

I just counted the links and there are 66.

Although the packaging is original Honda, the links have 'DID' stamped on some of them.
Others links have '270' and some have an 'H' with a weird symbol on either side.

Was the original one 'DID' with markings like mine?

Should I clean the tar grease off with petrol and soak in normal oil?

I've just checked the 2 chains in the daylight and they both have the same markings.
Not sure if my old chain was original, but at least they match.

is it definitely 1st/9th/27th marked?

Haynes manual says this but old chain is 1st/9th/25th and I've found other errors in manual.

Hi Baldrock,
I remember #25, but be caucious because of my Altersheimer :D

Anyways, just look at the things and do the following (I am citing our legend Harald :D ):
"-Erstes den hinteren Pfeil finden und mit dem Gewicht fluchten
- die Kette über das Ritzel der KW bei OT legen
- zuletzt den vorderen Ausgleicher so einsetzen, daß der Pfeil (diesmal auf der rechten Seite im Kurbelhaus) mit dem Gewicht fluchtet.

Alles wieder zusammenbauen. Fertig "

Gockel translates:
"-First find the back arrow and align it with the weight
- Put the chain over the sprocket of the KW at OT
- Finally insert the front balancer so that the arrow (this time on the right side in the crankcase) is in line with the weight."

Go ahaed!

BTW KW stands for "crankshaft"

thanks Peter. I had hoped not to ask too many questions about the engine rebuild, but I'm failing miserably lol

Thanks peter :zustimm:

not sure what you mean about the camshaft situation though, as haven't got that far yet (although I bought a NOS one 2 years ago before I found out the 500R has a hole drilled in the end for the rev counter. I'll tackle that problem when I get to it).
