Where is the front balancer sprocket punch mark?

Beitrag von baldock »

The Haynes manual shows a different front balancer sprocket than mine.
You can see all of the teeth on theirs, as there is no weight to cover them.
You can also clearly see the balance chain punch mark for link 1 to line up against. It is stamped below one of the teeth.
Mine however has no punch marks apart from those shown in the picture.
How do I locate the exact position of the number 1 link on the sprocket?

just to clarify, I need to know which tooth of the sprocket lines up with the white painted link number 1 of the balancer chain?
If it is the line marking on the weight, you can't see which tooth is directly behind it.

I try to explain it. take a look at the balance shaft in the housing there are small arrows on the right and left side of the housing. when the piston is at top dead center, the counterweights should be aligned with these arrows. It's much easier this way and you don't need the marking from the compensation chain. I don't have a picture right now, but when I get home I can send it to you.

so are you saying that there is no mark on the XL500R balancer sprocket to line up with link 1 of the chain?

What I need to do is put link 27 of the balancer chain on the marked tooth of the input shaft sprocket, then link 9 on the marked tooth of the crankshaft sprocket when its at TDC, then put the chain on whatever tooth of the front balancer sprocket that allows it to have the counterweights lining up with the marks on the housing?

No, no, no. 1-9-25 is the correct division. Crankshaft to top dead centre (TDC). The front balance weights must be down and in line with the marking on the right side of the casing. The rear balancer must also be down and with the marking to the casing.
As a short version: The piston is up and the balancer weights are down.

Thanks Gunnar.

1) Can I ask what manual you are getting this information from? The Haynes manual is useless.

2) If 9 (at TDC) and 25 (with weights down) are correctly on their punched dots, and the final sprocket position is decided purely by its weight being down and lining up with the markings on the housing, why do we even bother with marking link 1 on the chain?

3) Can you tell me where the markings on the housing are as I cant see any on mine?

I guess I must be thinking too much into this but it sounded so simple and accurate in the useless Haynes manual method :(

I'm an idiot!!!!

I was looking for all of the housing markings on the same side of the engine as the balancer chain, but the front sprocket has to be lined up by the weight on the other end of its shaft (the right side of the engine). When you said the right side, I thought you meant of the sprocket not the engine.

So I simply line up the front and back weights with the arrow marks on the housing (both hanging down), making sure that the middle camshaft is at TDC (see pictures)?

I can ignore the 1,9,25 links and the punch dots on the middle and back sprockets because none of that makes any difference????

normaly german spoken people use the Bucheli or the Service Manual. Sometimes additional Service Manuals.
Please send me an E-Mail I can give you a link.

Great, that you found the marks in the case. So its easy. Piston up, balancer down.
