what's the best way of removing this part?

Beitrag von baldock »

I stumbled onto a post here once covering this subject but have spent ages trying to find it again.

I think one suggestion was a nail with a lip ground on the end, It was pushed inside the hole and then a screw to wedge it before pulling out with pliers.

If anyone knows the name of the part for me to search or has the link I'd be grateful.

Also, it is sitting too low down to locate in the hole of the bearing case to stop it from rotating. Should it be raised by a few mm? What would stop it sinking again?

Hi Baldock,

you are not the first guy with this problem. I have written an instruction. And now also the instruction in English.
Try it. The first nail must be a very hard one.

Cheers Gunnar

thanks for the guide Gunnar.

It's hard to see how much of the 'set bearing pin' needs to stick up into the hole of the needle bearing case.

Can I ask what sort of length should go into the hole to stop it rotating and how do you stop it from sliding back down?

It would be handy to know the same for the 'fork shift pin' for the transmission shaft too?

I guess I could weld a bit on the end of that one (because it's not hollow), grind it into shape and push it into the crankcase hole to stop it sinking again?

Baldock, take care, to ensure that it don't sink again you have to check if the hole didn't break out at the bottom!

The hole should be closed at the bottom but very often a smal piece of aluminium broke out of the housing. And than you will have the same shit again after a short time and the first gear won't work properly...

I closed it with alu powder and Epoxy 2K glue.
But it last just 4..5 years.
I am looking for a new solution. If you have a good idea please tell us!

I think the previous owner of mine had bolted together the crankcases with the pin not located in the bearing case hole.

The result was that it pushed down and through the bottom as you describe.

I managed to buy another set of undamaged PD02 crankcases off ebay.

I did notice whilst looking that the pin sits very low on all of them (only a couple of mm sitting proud).

I was thinking a blob of weld on the bottom of the pin would raise it enough to do its job more effectively.

The pin is a tube with a side hole as well.
Not good to weld it...

And even if if would be longer you can press it trought the crankcase.

Did you check the bottom of your hole if it is open, if it broke trough?

sorry for any confusion, I meant welding/grinding the solid pin to make it slightly longer, not the hollow one.
I looked at several undamaged crankcases on ebay, and all of them seemed to have the pin only raised by about 1mm. The hole in the crankcase is manufactured too deep and the hole in the bearing case can take much more than 1mm without damaging the the crankcase when they are bolted together.

However, there doesn't seem to be any way of stopping the hollow pin from dropping down over time, but I would like to know how high to fit it for now?

I couldn't get it to come out with the above method, but I found another way.
Get a screw that just fits inside the hole enough to bite onto the tube but not damage it.
Blow down onto the hole for a few minutes with hot air gun so that the aluminum expands more than the steel.
A few tugs with the slide hammer and it pops out

does it have to be replaced with the 2 holes lined in a specific way?

does anyone know how much needs to be left sticking up for it to go into the bearing case and stop it rotating but not so far as to restrict oil flow?

The component is symmetrical and has two holes for the oil. It cannot be installed incorrectly.
Only press the component in slightly, the needle bearing cage does the rest when the housing is mounted.

Yes, because they are above the recess in the bearing seat
