kupplung problem

hello all
the girlfriend has just bought an 82 XL500 that runs well
but the clutch will need some work
when pulling the leaver in its very stiff but the cable routing is fine and moves freely on its own
hence the problem is inside the engine so im thinking it could be a bent clutch push rod that is the problem
so how easy is it to pull the side cover off as it has some sort of automatic decompressed connected to the kick-starter any help please is most welcome
Del :)

Hy there,
Maybe the previous owner used stronger springs or put shims under the old ones to preload them during rebuilt of the clutch. This is often done when the clutch begins to slip.
In case you pull the side cover, check the springs and look at the metal disks in the clutch itself. They shouldn´t show colours on their surface (looks like annealed metal...).
Best thing to do is to use new friction plates and use only two stronger springs instead of four...
Another option is to stretch the lever a little bit, let´s say by 50%.
Bub did this for his girlfriend a little while ago. She had trouble with the clutch because the necessary force was to big for her.
The result of a longer lever is a very smooth action and no problems with the way... remember, you trade leverage against way here, so don´t overdo it.
A bent push rod is quite unusual, this is a very massive part! Did you take a look at the exploded view drawings?
Also, during reassembly, make sure to take care of the cam that operates the decompression. If assembled the wrong way, the cam will break. You´ll know how to assemble it by looking at it.. it´s self explaining. :D

Have fun,
die Oma

Hi Del,

it's no problem to pull off the side cover ! You just have to dismantle the footrest and the kickstarter. Then you can hand over the automatic decompressed (you have to loosen the fixed "guidance" on top of the cylinder head and don't forget to adjust the automatic decompressed - the "play" on the decompressed lever must be between 1-2mm). Besides you can put up the cable of the clutch lever. Now you can pull off the side cover.

I hope you understand my english, i had to search for the right words in my dictionary - so i think not all the words i used are right.

So long

P.S.: Would it be better to write you in german?

Hy Del,
He just made it longer by 50%...gives more leverage --> lower force.

Have fun,
